On June 20, 1943, King George VI made a historic 10-hour visit to Malta.

A small marble plaque was laid to mark the spot where the King set foot ashore at the Custom House quay. It reads: ‘His Majesty King George VI landed here from HMS Aurora on 20 June, 1943, after the raising of the Siege’.

Works are currently in progress in connection with the extension of the adjacent quay. It is earnestly hoped that the plaque will safely and honourably survive these works.
