Ta’ Xbiex mayor Antoinette Vassallo’s view that residents of a village have an established right to reserved parking there (The Sunday Times, May 22) would create chaos were it to be applied all over Malta, and Ta’ Xbiex residents should not be any different from the rest of us.

The local council should have marked the spaces in blue paint but perhaps this would easily reveal the abuse. Instead, white paint was used and notices were put up all over the locality at a higher expense.

In Giuseppe Calì Street, parking is on both sides, barely leaving a space with side streets leading crosswise into the street. Is Ms Vassallo expecting drivers to look for signs rather than concentrate on their driving and watch for crossing pedestrians? Blue-painted car slots would have served the purpose better.

Incidentally, while this street is one-way down, the restricted parking sign is on the left of the corner, seen only by the non-existent traffic going up. Another two signs are at the bottom of the street at the junction with Testaferrata Street. I had pointed this out to the warden patrolling the area, but she did not seem to care.
