Beachvolley girls beaten
Vella seventh
Alison Borg and Gertrude Zarb will have to figure in a play-off for third place today after losing their beachvolley semi-final to Liech-tenstein 2-1, yesterday.
Borg and Zarb won the opening set 21-18 but the hosts hit back strongly to win the second 21-13 and then take the decider 15-7.
Malta play Luxembourg in the bronze medal match. Yesterday, Luxembourg lost to Cyprus 2-1 in the other semi-final.
At the shooting range in Balzers, William Vella wrapped up his commitments with a seventh placing in the 50m Rifle Prone competition.
Vella, so close to a bronze medal in Air Rifle earlier this week, made it to the final after totalling 555 points. However, the gap with the third-placed shooter was too wide to bridge and despite excellent scores of 10.4 and 10.6 he remained in the same position with an overall 652.6.
Helgi Christensen, of Iceland, won gold with 681 points ahead of Monaco’s Eric Lanza (679.6) and Iceland’s Jon Sigurdsson (678.9).
Vella’s showing in Rifle Prone yesterday wrapped up our shooters’ participation at the 2011 LieGames.
