I was struck by the way Lino Spiteri expressed his thoughts at the end of his article The Morning After And Life Beyond. “Let Archbishop Paul be the Good Shepherd that he had been. Let Bishop Grech follow his example. Those who do not believe or practise are at liberty to do so. But let the Church be a mother and teacher to help more of us want God in our lives.”
Here we have a beautiful and profound prayer. To want God in our lives is our ultimate desire. God’s love for us is so great He sent His Son Jesus Christ on earth to save us and give us the good news immortalised in the Gospel. One has to experience this relationship with Jesus to know what it means. Those who have Jesus in their lives – altruistically – try to share this joy with others. That is why those who are against divorce – for instance – stressed the importance of deciding with divine logic. This however depends on our willingness to follow Jesus. He presents us with guidelines leading to real joy despite all responsibilities or any situation. We are free to choose Him or any other option which we believe will solve our problems. Those Catholics who voted for divorce definitely preferred other options.
Evangelisation from the Church and convinced Catholics have to be linked to the opening – not blocking – of our hearts to Jesus. As St Augustine wrote in his Confessions: “Our hearts are made for you O Lord and they are restless until they rest in You”.
