People are often marginalised and excluded due to poverty, race, disability, sex, gender, age, religion...

With social inclusion in mind, on June 10 and 11 an event will take place in Republic Street, Valletta, aimed at promoting a society which supports and improves quality of life, social well-being and equal opportunities for all.

Through artistic means, speci-fically through photography, the biggest collaborative mosaic for social inclusion will be created.

The public is thus being invited to take photos that speak about understanding others, overcoming isolation and creating inclusion; pictures highlighting objects, stories, people and situations that represent symbolic “bridges ” – links that could create connections among people in order to reduce the isolation of those living on the outskirts of society.

Because pictures can be as powerful as words, if not more so, this initiative is intended to raise awareness about poverty and social inclusion through images.

This event is related to the 2010 European Year for the Combating of Poverty and Social Exclusion (EYCPSE). It is connected to a series of actions implemented by the Malta-EU Steering and Action Committee (MEUSAC) and financed by the European Commission (DG Comm) that have raised awareness on social issues through artistic media along the year.

Within the context of the EYCPSE, this photo competition and exhibition aims at promoting a society which supports and improves quality of life, social well-being and equal opportunities for all.

Participants are encouraged to reflect about this situation and to express their ideas of social inclusion through the photographs they take and those submitted for exhibition.

The mosaic will feature photographs and also drawings collected from as many diverse sources as possible, including NGOs, organisations and individuals.

All photos submitted electron-ically will be uploaded on Facebook and will also be printed and added to the mosaic. All pictures submitted will take part in a competition. The most “liked” photo on Facebook will win €200. Another prize of €200 will be awarded to the best picture selected by a jury.

Pictures can be posted on a dedicated Facebook page titled No Exclusions or can be e-mailed to noexclusions@eslmalta.com or posted to No Exclusions, 183/2 Constitution Street, Mosta.
