The German Government has decided to extend the number of refugees it will take from Malta from 100 to 150, the German embassy said.

The decision was taken in view of the growing number of arrivals.

"Germany follows the recommendation of the EU Council that EU members should show solidarity in view of the crisis in Libya and the increasing flow of sub-Saharan refugees from Libya.

"The German Government considers that, for specific reasons (size, population, geographical location), Malta is heavily burdened," the embassy said.

It said it was confident that, with the assistance of the Maltese authorities and the International Organisation for Migration, all 150 refugees can leave Malta this summer.
