Pope’s donation for Church agencies helping migrants
Sum will be shared between three
Church agencies dealing with migrants will have some aid from above to pay their bills as Pope Benedict XVI will be making a donation running into thousands of euros to help them in their work.
“It was the Pope himself who showed interest in this work and this proves that His Holiness does not only preach on the principles and values of solidarity with immigrants but also interests himself and keeps himself updated on what is happening,” Fr Alfred Vella, the Emigrants’ Commission’s director, said.
The sum will be shared between the commission, the Jesuit Refugee Service and the Peace Lab.
The commission, with offices in Valletta, helps migrants as soon as they are released from detention and manages about 400 beds for migrants, spread in 13 houses in seven localities in Malta.
JRS takes care of migrants upon their arrival in Malta and provides them with legal advice where necessary.
The Peace Lab, run by Fr Dionysus Mintoff, organises activities and provides accommodation to about 50 migrants in Ħal Far.
