Malta was giving priority to heritage projects when it came to spending EU funds, according to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

He spent more than two hours visiting the premises of Heritage Malta in Kalkara on Tuesday when he met members of the staff carrying out restoration and conservation works.

About €20 million in EU funds had already been spent on various projects around Malta and Gozo and some €60 million worth of projects were in the pipeline.

It was crucial to protect the rich Maltese heritage, which gave people their identity. He said much of the heritage was hidden for too long but such treasures were now there for all to appreciate.

Dr Gonzi said this formed part of the country’s Vision 2015 economic strategy because it helped boost tourism.
