A group of some 30 Libyans, including women and children, are holding a peaceful demonstration opposite the Libyan embassy in Balzan, calling on the embassy officials to switch their allegiance to the Benghazi-based National Council.

The protest continues until 3 p.m.

A spokesman for the demonstrators said they were extremely grateful for yesterday's Maltese government declaration, which practically recognised the Council. Malta, he said, had always supported their cause and he knew that this day would come.

Some of those present are carrying placards saying "Thank You Malta".

Another placard reads: "Gaddafi wants us dead, you want us alive." Their biggest one read "Your presence here is illegal".

Many of the demonstrators are waving the old Libyan monarchy flag. They played the Libyan anthem

The all green Libyan flag is continuing to fly from the embassy, which is surrounded by barricades.
