May wetter than usual

The usually sunny month of May was slightly wetter and colder than usual, according to official weather statistics. In fact, 10.6 millimetres of rain were recorded last month, higher than the average 6.7 millimetres, the Meteorological Office said yesterday.

The highest amount of rainfall ever recorded in May was in 1976 with a total of 49.1 millimetres. May also had a mean temperature of 18.9 °C, making it slightly cooler than the 30-year climate mean of 19.1°C.

The warmest day was May 28 when the mercury hit 27.3 °C. The warmest May day was in 2006 when 35.3 °C were recorded on the 23rd.

The lowest temperature was 11.1°C on May 8. The coolest night since 1923 was May 4, 1970 with a low of 8°C.
