Fifty-three per cent of the electorate “did not let Christ illuminate their decision” in the divorce referendum, Christian movement Kristu Iva, Divorzju Le said today.

“Christ is not an opinion. Christ is the way, the truth and the life,” Clyde Attard, the movement’s spokesman said, adding the group had embarked on its campaign because it believed that what Christ said was for the good of humanity.

The movement, he said, would continue as a movement which would be open to people who needed help and strength to save their marriages.

Asked by reporters whether they recognised that their all-out campaign with a large image of Christ and the words “Christ yes, divorce no” plastered round the country might have put people off the Church or actually incited them to vote Yes instead, Mr Attard said “we do not measure our success by numbers, but by the people who are touched by Christ’s love... which can’t be measured”.

The movement’s billboards were up to a point the icon of the no campaign, with various foreign news agencies reporting on the divorce referendum publishing pictures of it. The billboards and the accompanying slogan also spawned a huge number of spoofs online.

Josette Bonello, who also fronts the movement, said, when pressed, that “no, we did not push people away from Christ”.

When queried on whether the movement was aware that their campaign was being satirized to blasphemous degrees, Mr Attard said it was up to the people that mocked them, and they were merely presenting the face of Christ as one which speak love to people.

Mr Attard also said that the movement did not receive any formal communication from the Curia on the campaign they were carrying out.

“We have no strategy... All we’re saying is – Christ loves you, and he’s saying, follow my word,” Mr Attard said.

The movement can be contacted via Facebook, email or mobile.
