Updated: Malta recognises Libyan Transitional Council 'as sole interlocutor'
The government announced this evening Malta is recognising the National Transitional Council of Libya as the sole legitimate interlocutor of the Libyan people.
In a statement this evening, Prime Minister Larence Gonzi said the government informed the council's chairman and head of International Affairs of the Executive Board of the National Transitional Council of Libya Mahmoud Jibril of Malta's decision yesterday.
Cabinet took the decision on Monday.
Dr Jibril described this decision as a very important step forward which the Libyan people will never forget.
He added that while he hoped that the Maltese government will eventually decide to go for full recognition, this was a development that was very much appreciated.
When asked about reports on Twitter, quoting the Al Jazeera network, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry this morning said:“The information, as reported, is not correct.”
He added that Foreign Minister Tonio Borg will tomorrow give an update of the situation to Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee.

A step in the right direction, now more than ever Malta should do its little bit to help the Libyan people end Gaddafi's tyranny. Gaddafi is passe. He will soon cease to make the headlines. The Libyan people deserve a democratic set-up. It will obviously take time - months and years - but it will come.

Very good news. I now ask Minister Borg to simplify the visa requirement conditions for people wanting to visit Malta from Benghazi. One of the almost impossible conditions is that the applicant needs to send a scanned copy of his ENTIRE passport. How can this happen when there are no internet links? At least ask for the pages which show the applicant's and passpoat details only.
I can assure the minister that ther are quite a number of businessmen wanting to visit Malta, please let us not lose this significant ecomomic opportunity.

That's right Mr. Prime Minister, help the rebels they will thank us, by sending boatloads of illegal immigrants .

Mr. Stanley, illegal immigration in Libya was organised by Saif al-Islam Gaddafi who is now dead, or runnibg away from death. Recognisng the Libyan TNC is the last thing we could do to help democracy take its rightful place in Libya. The Libyans are crying out for political support which is now coming from everywhere except some dictatorial/tyrannical regimes whose leaders are now feeling threatend by the global freedom movement. Taking the TNC's recognition by the Malltese gov as an opportunity to criticise the Prime Minister is nothing but an insult to the Libyan people and to your own intelligence. There are many other matters upon which we can criticise the PM, but not this one. Democracy has arrived in LIbya, and we Maltese will be riding on that fact, both politicially and economically.

Thank you very much for your comment Mr. Ellul, so according to you that's ok to send us all these immigrants. time will tell how democratic they will be.

A step in the right direction
The Libyan people should feel that the Maltese support their quest for freedom from tyranny.
Recognizing the National Transitional Council implies that we are trusting this Council to ensure that Libyans will determine their own future in a Democratic way.
I believe that Libyan Funds in Malta should now be released to the National Transitional Council under adequate scrutiny for proper use of these funds

“We are as close as possible to the Libyan people,” Dr Gonzi had said.
"...without touching them with a stick!"
That's what I would have added. If this is what looking after a country is like, no wonder they (Maltese people) don't care about their own.

Why all the fuss by foreign countries interested in Libya' oil to recognise a transition council lead by defectors and rag-tag rebels. These countries did not even bother to mention the word Free Elections. These rebels do not represent the whole people of Libya. So, this transitional council should name a provisional date for free election, after the situation in Libya is stabalised. When we see the masses of people in the squares protesting like we are seeing in the other Arab countries, then we would have an idea what is the will of the majority of the Libyan people.

Although there's nothing wrong in being interested in a country's oil, after all the whole world uses oil, I agree completely with Mr P.Sciberras assertion that "Free Elections" and "Democratic governance" be part and parcel of any support we give to any emerging representation in Libya or anywhere else for that matter.

Call me critical, but isn't naming a date for elections a little bit premature when there's still a civil war going on?

I urge the Maltese Government to recognise the Libyan Transitional Council as the sole representative of the Libyan people as soon as possible.
The other major European Countries have or will soon open consulates in Benghazi to help trade and co operation move faster.
If Malta continues draging its feet we will again be left with nothing, because all the important contracts will already be concluded. Companies from other European countries are working to have contrats in place soon.
Here in Malta we are still making it practically impossible for a Libyan in Benghazi to get a visa to visit Malta. Even those who have companies registered in Malta!!!!!!!!

The govrnment was suppose to represent all MALTESE, so your urge is only for yourself.
Being scared to stand up as MALTA Prime minister and not cameron / sarkozy / EU puppet
it is now in the affirmative to loose office and whatever respect he achieved during career.
Regime will survive and MALTA will again gain our friendship with
