Police constable accused of accepting bribes

A police constable was taken to court today to face charges of bribery.

Ian Grech, 36 of Marsascala, was accused of having accepted bribes from Jimmy Bonavia of Zabbar to strike off traffic contraventions.

He was also accused of having committed a crime he was duty-bound to prevent. He was also accused of relapsing.

During this afternoon's hearing, the Court was told that the constable was going through financial problems as he was in the process of separation.

The constable was granted bail against a personal guarantee of €10,000.

Yes can some one pls explain how a police officer can retain his post after committing a crime. The public is of the opinion that police officers should have a clean conduct. The mind boggles .

Relapsing from what? Our criminal system may mean a relapse from many different charges...

Commissioner of Police, please explain to the people of Malta how a police officer was still in the force when he is now being accused of being a RELAPSER. Answers please and dont hide behind technicalities. How can the police be trusted by the public? Not knowing who in the police force has a criminal record. Can the Commissioner oblige us with a whole list of all those police officers and men, who dont have a clean criminal conduct?? I will never ever trust a policeman not even a recruit.
