A pair of French Air Force Dassault Mirage 2000 fight aircraft have landed in Malta because of technical problems.

The fighters declared an emergency while returning from an operation over Libya. It is understood that they are carrying live ammunition.

The Mirage 2000 is the latest product from the Mirage stable and one of the most modern fighters in the French Air Force (alone with the Rafale).

A Mirage 2000 first came to Malta a few years ago for the international air show.

So far, emergency diversions to Malta were made by four pairs of relatively old Mirage F1 fighters and a Super Etendard bomber.
