The car scrappage scheme has been extended to include another 1,000 cars, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said today.

He said the governemnt had a budget of €2.5m for the scheme. He said that as a result of the scheme, first announced in the last budget, some 2,000 old cars had been replaced by 2,000 small and cleaner cars. With €1m remaining in the budget for the scheme, is had been decided that the scheme would be extended.

The scheme will remain open up to November 15. Cars have to be older than 10 years in order to be scrapped.

Owners are eligible for a refund up to €2,000 on the purchase of a new, low emission vehicle when they scrap the old one.
