Miroslav Klose remains German national coach Joachim Loew’s preferred choice despite playing second fiddle to Mario Gomez at German giants Bayern Munich, Loew said yesterday.

Loew told the reporters that 32-year-old Klose, who is second in the national side all-time scorers list with 61 goals, had the upper hand on Gomez when it came to international football.

“Miro is still a little superior to Mario with regards to his ability to change his style of play during a match and his all-round capability,” said Loew.

Despite Loew’s assessment, Gomez has had a much more prolific season at club level.

The 25-year-old, scorer of 15 goals in his 43 internationals, is coming off his best season, having scored 28 times to finish the Bundesliga leading scorer. Klose, by contrast, scored just once all season.

Loew’s remarks indicate that Klose will start as his lone frontman for the friendly with Uruguay today and the Euro 2012 Group A qualifier against Austria on June 3.
