Melita is to launch two new applications which will allow subscribers to use Facebook on their television sets instead of a computer and use their mobile phones as a remote control for the Melita NetBox HD.

The telecoms group also plans to launch video on-demand services nationwide this summer.

Chief executive officer AndreiTorriani made the announcements on Tuesday as Melita officially launched Malta’s fastest broadband internet connection reaching up to 100 Megabits per second.

“Our investment in broadbandis an investment strategy ofchoice,” Mr Torriani said. “Owning a fibre-rich, broadband platform enables Melita to provide products and services which convergevoice, data and video technologies into entertainment and communications applications.”

Melita, which celebrates 20 years in business this year, has deployed a new technology developed by Cisco which allows internet users to reach very high broadband speeds.

By adopting this technology, Melita is placing Malta ahead of other European countries such as Germany, where the roll-out of DOCSIS 3.0 technology is expected to reach 75 per cent availability by the end of 2012.
