It was five years ago that Reuben Spiteri, Tribali’s Peter Paul and the late Desmond Vella first talked of staging an event that would embrace a festival concept while projecting an environamental message to all those who participate.
Little did they know then that Earth Garden, as it was eventually christened, would become an eagerly-anticipated event of such magnitude on the local music calendar, attracting more than 10,000 visitors over two days.
With ‘Water Consciousness’ as the theme of its environmental concept, the 2011 Go Earth Garden festival will be striving to raise awareness and address the ongoing issue of increasing water consumption and the deterioration of freshwater sources in Malta. Furthermore, the use of recyclable materials is also intended to underline the festival’s environmental spirit.
Like past editions, the entertainment structure of the event will be divided in two areas – the Open Village area which has free entrance, and the Greek Theatre, which will host a paying concert on Saturday night. For more information on this, call 7994 8529.
This year, Maltese electronic artist Cygna will open with a 40-minute live audiovisual set, followed by a full-on performance from Tribali, the latter’s presence having now become synonymous with the Earth Garden.
After an absence of almost a year from the stage, Tribali are looking forward to performing, more so as the concert will coincide with the imminent release of the band’s third album.
Inside the Open Village, the Festive Grove will include an extended campsite, an ethnic market, the Electronic Sphere and a holistic area which will feature a chillout zone organised by Why Not?, where various environmental workshops and jamming sessions from Get Up! Stand Up! and Jamming Malta will be staged.
The Electronic Sphere will host various artists, among them DJ Armin Boom Shankar on Saturday and activities by Perpendicular on Sunday.
Another popular area is the world, blues and jazz section, which this year will this year host eight acts. Saturday night will feature a variety of performances, among them upbeat Latin rhythms from the multi-cultural Este Mundo and ethnic fusion with a Mediterranean flavour from Trania. Blues band The Creepers will open the Sunday night line-up, followed by a performance from energetic Maltese-Australian artist Nicky Bomba.
The Juuls reggae party will bring the festival to a close later in the evening.
Earth Garden takes place at Ta’ Qali National Park on Saturday and Sunday.
