A number of immigrants were this morning arrested by the police for causing substantial damage to the ground floor of one of the blocks at the Safi Detention Centre during a riot yesterday evening, the Home Affairs Ministry said.

No one was injured during the incidents, which involved around 90 immigrants at Block B.

It is understood that the protest was over food.

The situation was brought under control by 1 a.m.

Following a number of searches in the dormitories of the people involved, a number of dangerous items, including iron rods, were confiscated. Some mobile phones were also taken away.
