Thank you for A Century Ago of Wednesday, May 17, 1911. The late Michele Apap who bequeathed thousands of pounds to charities on his demise, was the merchant who, on October 14, 1902, bought the old three-decker Hibernia at auction for £1,010. It was a good bargain because the value of the hulk, which, incidentally, had been a part of the harbour scene since 1855, was estimated at £18,000-£25,000. Apap sold the hulk almost immediately for £2,100 and the new owners broke the vessel at Pietà.
