Birkirkara St Joseph’s long-distance swimmer Keith Bartolo has qualified to be part of a team of swimmers who will attempt to set a new world record by swimming 12 ways on Lake Windermere for a distance of 201.6km (126 miles).

The other team members are Dee Llewellyn, Liane Llewellyn, Michelle Sharples, Thomas Noblett and Michelle Lefton. The team depart from Ambleside today at 7 p.m. and will strive to finish around 6 p.m. on Monday.

The swim will be ratified by the British Long Distance Swimming Association.

Bartolo has also been accepted to take part in the Lake Zurich 26km race, an event which is ranked 10th among the world’s open water swims.

Next year, the Birkirkara SJ swimmer will be attempting the 26km solo swim from Jersey to France, and is also planning to swim the 64 kilometres round Jersey.

Classified 11th and 12th in the international open water swimming calendar, these two swims will form part of Bartolo’s build-up for his ambitious attempt to swim the English Channel in 2013.
