Some 347 immigrants in a boat reported in trouble around 60 miles south of Lampedusa in Malta's search and rescue area at around 7 p.m. yesterday were eventually saved by four Italian patrol boats and taken to Lampedusa.

The rescue was coordinated by the Armed Forces of Malta.

The boat was reported to have rudder trouble by an aircraft in the area.

The Italian authorities initially allegedly said they did not have any craft available to help save the immigrants.
