The government is to consider a proposal made by the police association to raise fines for violent incidents during football matches like those witnessed on Sunday in the FA Trophy final between Valletta and Floriana.

The Home Affairs Minister said the proposal was submitted following the incidents during which a Floriana player and two policemen were slightly injured.

A Valletta player and four supporters have been arraigned over the incidents.

Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici expressed solidarity with the police officers who were attacked and reiterated his support for the force in their fight against violence and delinquency.

The minister added the incident was not an isolated one and such behaviour should not be acceptable in a democratic society.
