A resident of Zabbar filed a judicial protest today, saying that a site officially listed as a wedding hall had been operating as a supermarket for many years and Mepa had done nothing about it.
The protest was filed by John Cordina, who lives adjacent to Scotts Supermarket (formerly Pirella Supermarket) in Hompesch Street, Zabbar.
He said that Mepa had issued enforcement notices against the supermarket in 1997 and 1999 but, 14 years on, they had not been executed. As a result, illegal structures were still in place.
Furthermore, a 20-year-old appeal from a decision on an extension of garages had still not been determined. Strangely, Mr Cordina said, this application had somehow been changed from: "To sanction change of use from wedding hall into a licensed supermarket including an extension to the supermarket and a parking area' into 'extension of garages'".
Mr Cordina said Mepa was continuing to drag its feet while the compex involved was continuing to operate as a supermarket when it was still officially listed as a weddings hall (Corrigo Weddings Hall).
Mr Cordina said Mepa was acting in an abusive and illegal manner. He called on it to remove the illegalities.
