During the present divorce debates, very often, well almost on a regular basis, we hear how we must “Make the family stronger” and that we must “Help those whose marriage has failed”.

What, however, we never hear is how. No one has as yet come up with solid solutions, because in reality, I think there are none.

To talk about marriage, I think you have first to experience marriage!

To talk about marriage breakdown, and the pain it brings with it, it would help immensely if you or a member of your family has experienced such. Then you can talk about it.

It is devious to think that people separate for the fun of it. Often, people go through years of hell before deciding to separate.

One of the propositions to come out from the no movement is for better preparation for marriage. I honestly do not understand how they have the nerve to suggest “better preparation”. I mean, the Cana Movement has been conducting compulsory courses for people who are about to be married for decades.

So, with all the marriage breakdowns in our society, have these courses failed miserably? The truth be told – there is no magic wand solution to marriage breakdown!

It is odd or maybe hypocritical that we approve Church annulment, state separation, foreign divorce but are now fighting hard against the introduction of local divorce. The Maltese are renowned for being charitable when called upon. I now urge everyone to show compassion with those Maltese citizens in need and vote yes in the coming referendum.
