Maltese company to run McDonald's in Greece
Premier Capital plc, a wholly owned Maltese company, has been appointed as a developmental licensee for McDonald’s in the Greek market - McDonald’s Europe announced today.
Premier Capital plans to take over 19 restaurants mainly located in and around Athens and become key in the future development of the McDonald’s business and brand in Greece from June 1.
Premier said is viewed this acquisition as a major step forward in achieving further expansion in Europe. Premier Capital currently owns eight McDonald’s restaurants in Malta along with another 10 in Estonia, nine in Lithuania and eight in Latvia. This new acquisition brings the total number of McDonald’s restaurants owned and operated by Premier Capital to 54 across five territories.
“We are very happy to have concluded the negotiation successfully and are now looking forward to this new challenge. We are confident that the Greek market is full of potential and see many opportunities to improve and grow the McDonald’s business in Greece” said Marin Hili, Chairman of Premier Capital.
In a statement Steve Easterbrook, President of McDonald’s Europe said “We are confident that the agreement with Premier Capital will help enhance the McDonald’s brand in Greece, build the business over the long term and further strengthen the relationship with our customers.”
Owned by Marin, Beppe and Melo Hili, Premier Capital acquired the McDonald’s Malta operation back in 2005. Three years later the company expanded into the Baltics where it runs all of the McDonald’s restaurants in the three Baltic countries. The company currently generates annual revenues up to €50 million and provides jobs for over 2000 people. Its current 35 restaurants serve more than 24 million customers every year.

Premier are obviously doing something right so I wish them luck.
So now it's Greece. In Turkey McDonald's - they pronounce it 'makdonis', bless 'em - is all over the place. Now this is strange. Strange because of all countries, Turkey has to be up there, first, in the business of fast food eaten on the hoof (Turkish cuisine is incredible because it came about through the nomadic nature of Turkish society in the past. That is, cook what is available in any one place which was limited by definition but made up for it by sheer imagination. The nomads settled ages ago but the recipes persist. I can smell a whiff of the charcoal as I write. Ankara beckons with a hamam or two to burn off the fat. Helped along by 'what's-his-name' the masseur, the beguiling sloe-eyed one. Turkey does not need a 'makdonis' but it's taken off big time. The young, you see, they want connection to the West. And Maltese youth. It is a trend one cannot help noticing. Implications?! We'll have to wait and see.
A double 'makdonis' please. Make sure it is halal, ja Mustafa!

These things are an acknowledgement of merit to Maltese undertaking. You Sirs, make us greatly honoured with your success. We wish you well in your expansion!
How silly it was when one in authority said he would choose a foreigner than a 'gahan malti'.
