After that famous homily by Gozo Bishop Mario Grech, full of insults and threats to those who have every right to vote according to their conscience and tick the yes box in the referendum, it is worthwhile reminding Mgr Grech that not even Christ was as judgemental as him. Christ said: “Judge not so that you will not be judged”; “those who have no sin throw the first stone” and “let corn and darnel grow together” and so on. And finally Christ was not against divorce in cases of infidelity.

If we went by that famous quote, “What God has put together, let no man put asunder” not even the Maltese Curia has the power to annul a marriage. If, as the Curia argues, annulment is sometimes necessary, then so is divorce, which has the same effect.

It makes me laugh to hear of couples who have been married for years in the Church, and who have children, having their marriage declared non-existent.

Many of those who are against divorce declare they are worried about the maintenance of wife and children.

But does every couple have children? Are there not separated couples whose children have grown up?

Are not young separated women able to work, like many other women do? May I ask Mgr Grech: If these concerns are only crocodile tears, who are the “wolves in sheep’s clothing”?
