The introduction of divorce would be very dangerous for the integrity of the family which, throughout the centuries, has been a fundamental institution of society.
The most significant danger of divorce would be the introduction of a mentality which would lead young people to take up the important, decisive step of marriage rashly and irresponsibly, as they would enter marriage with the possibility of divorce at the back of their minds.
With the introduction of divorce, marriage would no longer be a bond based on mutual respect, sacrifice and self-discipline but would become a union based mostly on self-satisfaction.
The situation of the family in Malta today is like that of a wound slowly oozing blood. With divorce we would have a society with two deep wounds oozing yet more blood. It is just a case of jumping from the frying pan into the fire.
What the Maltese family needs is an ongoing commitment by the state and the Church to prepare and help couples who choose marriage and want to form a family.
Divorce is surely no solution to our difficulties.
