Mepa orders audit of Enemalta emissions data, may fine corporation

Mepa has ordered an audit of Enemalta's power stations emissions data and may impose penalties on the corporation for exceeding emission levels last year.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said in parliament that as soon as Mepa was made aware that Enemalta had exceeded the ceilings set in the IPPC permit, it requested a detailed explanation from the corporation on the discrepancy between the projected and the actual emission levels.

A working group was set up between Mepa and Enemalta to analyse the data and the submitted data will be audited.

The processes for emissions reporting for this year are also being reviewed.

The Environment Protection Directorate has also presented the Mepa board with various alternatives of how the Authority may eventually impose a fine on Enemalta. However the corporation will first need to formally present the Mepa board with an explanation for the  exceedances.

Mr S. Micallef What are you suggesting that instead of the fine Enemalta gives a bonus to its board and senior managers!
