Mepa orders audit of Enemalta emissions data, may fine corporation
Mepa has ordered an audit of Enemalta's power stations emissions data and may impose penalties on the corporation for exceeding emission levels last year.
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said in parliament that as soon as Mepa was made aware that Enemalta had exceeded the ceilings set in the IPPC permit, it requested a detailed explanation from the corporation on the discrepancy between the projected and the actual emission levels.
A working group was set up between Mepa and Enemalta to analyse the data and the submitted data will be audited.
The processes for emissions reporting for this year are also being reviewed.
The Environment Protection Directorate has also presented the Mepa board with various alternatives of how the Authority may eventually impose a fine on Enemalta. However the corporation will first need to formally present the Mepa board with an explanation for the exceedances.

On the brighter side of things, its just less then 2 years left for this government to vacate its position so this country gets on its feet

What a brilliant non solution!
Yes, fine Enemalta....only Enemalta happens to be a parastatal company, so no prizes for guessing who will ultimately pay the fine.
Ultimately, the power that be would have decided to do absolutely nothing to solve the issue, if they limit themselves to a fine, to be paid for by the Maltese customer/taxpayer.

And would the loss of revenue then result in a further price hike for us? I wish someone would audit Enemalta's costing exercises....

Sorry aren't Enemalta and Mepa run by the same government? none of them are privately owned, So if enemalta paid mepa a fine isn't that like me fining my wife but we both share the same kitty!
if Enemalta was fined would that result in a loss of revenue at the end of the year?

Mr S. Micallef What are you suggesting that instead of the fine Enemalta gives a bonus to its board and senior managers!

It may or it may not.
But It definetly means more tax for you and me as a result.
