Garibaldi Street closed for about a year
Garibaldi Street, one of the main roads leading to the airport, was closed yesterday for about a year for rebuilding.
The works are part of a project, announced last month, of major road upgrading as part of the TEN-T Trans-European Transport Network.
Other road works in the same project include Council of Europe Road, also in Luqa, Flagstone Wharf and Triq l-Ghassara tal-Gheneb in Marsa, Marfa Road from Mellieha to Cirkewwa and Mgarr Road, Gozo, between Xewkija and Victoria.
The works on Council of Europe and Garibaldi streets are projected to cost €10m and will be completed in a year, a spokesman for Transport Malta said.
85% of the cost of the projects will be forked out by the EU.
The projects will include new utility services and boundary walls, landscaping, street furniture and safety features.
Alternative routes have been prepared for people wishing to go to the airport.

Apart from the extremely long and unjustified period estimated for re-doing this road, I do firmly think that there are worse ones that need work....
Makes me remember when some 7 years ago, a contractor was supposed to do B'KAra Road, St.Julians, which took ages to complete.

And don't forget, only one way.
Since I'll be working next to MIA come October or January, I was silently saying things that the editor no doubt would censor, but then I saw the other projects, including the closure of one of the few half-decent exits out of Valletta in the middle of the City Gate project. It... could have been worse.

To everyone wondering why it will take a year to finish, ask yourself what will happen in just over a years time.
That's right, an election. Instead of pushing the contractors to finish these projects in a reasonable time, teh government will have its fanfare openings and we will have yet another brochure through our doors with all the 'finished' projects just like last time. Except half of those were not finished and some are still ongoing.

I have seen complaints and more complaints here, but I pass through Bulebel, then Tal Barrani, xintill roundabout down Sta Lucia Avenue through Marsa. This morning at 7:35 I was at the traffic lights at the end of Tarxien road (Bulebel) at 8:00 I was at Junior college, which with all the traffic is not bad.But I need to ask the following.
What were the Transport Malta personell doing standing smartly at Xintill roundabout looking at the cars drive by? These could have been better utilised at the junction between sta Lucia avenue and Palm street to stop those ruddy idiots cutting into traffic and holding up a massive number of cars, the traffic police near the cemetary was doing a good job as were all his collegues. So please all those grumbling shut up and let the people work.

Typically motorways abroad are built from scratch at a rate of 1km per week. Imagine taking 6 months per kilometer!

"85% of the cost of the projects will be forked out by the EU."
How jolly nice of them. They take our taxes, then give us some of it back and tell us what to do with it. The rest they keep to pay for the handsome salaries of the fat cats at Brussels. I am almost ashamed that I had voted NO to this European Utopia.

I live at Zurrieq.
I will have to pass through alternative routes daily to go to work and back home and not "for people wishing to go to the airport".
Without the major road works, queue starts at SGS, now propably it will start at Zurrieq!
I do not know when I will be arriving at Valletta for work. Most probably, park and ride will be full by the time arrive.
May God help us!!!
Sarah Attard

It's not just that Park & Ride will be full by the time you get to Valletta for work .... in less than 2 months time you have to find somewhere else to park as Park & Ride will be charging €2.50 per day and if you're late you've had it ..... believe me I know, I work in Valletta aswell!!!!

However much news of new and well built roads is welcome, I can't even imagine the total traffic disaster that this is going to cause, will we see traffic police doing a proper job will they be placed in advance of the bottlenecks advising of routes ahead (i suggest they use the Afm choppers for traffic reports).
Also please traffic police fine the idiots who have no patience and insist on pushing in therefore making the traffic worse.
