Update 2: Dog was shot before being buried alive

A vet has established that a dog that was found buried alive in Birzebbuga this afternoon had been shot.

The dog was found to have a blow on the head - now found to have been caused by a gunshot -and is now being operated.

The discovery was made near Ghar Hasan by officers of the Animal Welfare Department after an anonymous tip-off.

Department officials said they had gone to the site to investigate animal cruelty and heard a dog whining. They lifted a plank of wood which was being held in place by a heavy trunk and found the snout of  the dog just sticking out of the soil.

When it was pulled out, the dog, a white and black mixed breed, was found to have had all four legs bound together. Its mouth was also tied.

Despite everything, the animal welfare officers said they were surprised that the dog was friendly and did not try to run away. It is being treated at the animal welfare centre.

@Gerry Cowie
Killing babies is deplorable no doubt about it.
But here we are deploring this HORRIBLE COWARDLY INSANE act, so yes the more messages the better to show that we are STRONG against such acts.

Ms Emma Xerri

@Martin Chetcuti

Killing babies is a crime all over the world. Abortion however, is not the killing of babies but the termination of unwanted pregnancies, in the first semester when there is nothing to differentiate the embryo from that of any other mammal. This could be done for therapeutic and medical reasons, such as congenital or genetic diseases, the mother's health is in danger from the pregnancy, in cases of rape and where the mother has psychological or mental problem and the forthcoming child is unwanted by its parent. Moreover, abortion saves the lives of thousands of women each year, who would otherwise opt for back-street abortions, but then to the Catholic Church, a fertilised ovum is worth much more then the life of a woman, seeing they are second class beings and who knows, the precious embryo destroyed might have been male, god's favourite gender apparently.

@Gerry

And why shouldn't we be more interested in the welfare of animals - they are far superior to this monkey that we call man that thinks so highly of itself that it stoops so low as to think that it is made in God's own image.

200 posts hardly constitutes us on the whole as an animal loving nation. More, much more needs to convince me of this I'm afraid.....

I tend to disagree. We don't own a dog or any other pet but I can't imagine my son doing something like that. On the other hand, the bastard who did this in fact 'owned' a dog and see where it led. It's all a matter of education and upbringing and you don't need to own a pet in order to respect animals Just remembering that these creatures have feelings is enough to treat them with kindness and love.

Christine Hole

May 20th 2011, 13:58

I had my first pet dog when I was well in my 20's but I always respected and loved animals. It's a matter of being mentally sick cos the person who did it surly is.

Ms M. Bartolo

I never had pets because the flat I live in is not suitable to have pets, however I adore animals, I know how to share things and am aware that the world does not revolve around me!

Yes, why not? a human being has enough love to cover many issues simultaneously. Animal lovers are capable of loving humans too. Some persons are even capable of showing empathy with other suffering individuals even though they themselves are not suffering.

Ms Margaret Williams

Yes i read that same quote before, and as you rightly say Mr.Cowie, quote :you can judge a nation by the way it treats its animals, and by the look of things the Islanders are not all what they seem to be, in otherwords they're not angels but some are right Bastards who need to be put away for good, they know who they are as i'm sure the guilty person or persons go to their god and pray as how good they are, but infact when they shut their eyes at night he or she will see the very dog's pittyness for the rest of their live(s). May they rot in Hell! end of quote.

V Bartolo, I can understand how you are feeling right now! I had to put down my labrador 15 years ago on the 17th May and I still miss him and still cry for him! I assure you, this day of this month is invariably a very sad day for me. You might get another dog similar to the one you had but the first will always hold that special place. Courage, dear!

Sometimes violence is justified! These "people" will never be reformed.

Mary Vella

May 19th 2011, 18:32

In agreement with your comment Mr. Farrugia. we all vent our rage when something like this is shown, but how many of us still go to the circus and worse take our children to see and laugh at those poor creatures forced to do antics that are so unnatural to them? how many of us eat meat not giving one thought of what that poor animal want through just so we can eat it? how many of us donate to sanctuaries or even volunteer?
it's quite easy to rant and write violent comments on what one would like to do to this person. it would be better if we can see what to do to make this world a better place for animals and humans alike.

Michael Vella

May 19th 2011, 22:45

As Ms. Emma Xerri said, it is about time the authorities did something serious to put these sick barbaric acts to an end. Create laws that allow the courts to dish out sentences that are actually a deterrent. I don't think i remember one speech by any of our self righteous politicians that ever focussed on animal welfare in this country. Ok we got an Animal Welfare department, however, unless this department is backed up by tough laws, nothing is going to change in this country!

Shame on politicians on both sides for having done NOTHING to toughen up the law to help the plight of animals in this country. As i said before, it just goes to show that animals don't vote...but we do and as Ms. Xerri said, the next politician to come knocking on my door begging for my vote is going to face a barrage of questions about animal welfare in this country!

Victor Rodenas

May 19th 2011, 18:15

How about an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

Ms Emma Xerri

May 19th 2011, 18:19

We need to put this issue - animal cruelty, animal welfare on the political agenda. Next election, the party that puts this on their political platform, including concrete proposals as well as budgets for education, rehabilitation of animals and harsh punishement and re-education of those convicted of animal cruelty, would get our votes. We need a strong lobby group to speak on behalf of the innocent and the voiceless - our defenceless animals companions and all animals in general.

Mr Joe Gatt

May 19th 2011, 18:25

Is this as a result of increased control over dog owners? God spare these innocent creatures if this is to happen more often

Neville Zammit

May 19th 2011, 19:01

Sfortunatament la l-politici u l-anqas il-knisja dawn l-atti moqzieza mhux daqshekk importanti ghalijom, ghax l-annimali ma jrebbhukx il-poter!

Mr Martin Saliba

May 19th 2011, 19:03

@ Mr. Joe Gatt. As i have said before , if dog owners are not made by law to take their dog to the SPCA or other ngo when it dies so that cause of death could be verified a lot of dogs are going to have a gruesome death. As always in Malta we we things with half measures so long as we can say that we did something.

Mr Joe Gatt

May 20th 2011, 00:35

@Mr Martin Saliba

So true, but what if the electronic identification chip was removed, and I do not mean surgically under anaestheic either.

You can very well see what some are capable of doing. This poor creature was very lucky to have been found and saved

Marthese Camilleri

May 19th 2011, 17:49

I fully agree, jahsra. Thank god they found the poor dog on time

Solange Abela

May 19th 2011, 17:59

My thoughts exactly Mr Galea!

Ms Emma Xerri

May 19th 2011, 18:36

While I agree that people that could do this to a dog or an animal could also to the same to a person or child, this is not the reason that they should be caught and punished for animals have a right to life in their own right and freedom from suffering and pain, thirst and hunger like the rest of us. Basing everything on our own egocentric views shows why we have this problems in the first place.

An anthropocentric universe (or a man centred universe) as preached by most of the world's religions, has caused a lot of harm to all creatuers on our planet and is also making us forget that we are part and parcel of the whole and whatever affects one species, will rebound on all the others, including man. It is not true that this earth and all there is in it was made for man to use and master - we are part of nature and cannot live outside of it. We are doing this at our own pepril. As the Bible says, 'what befalls animals, also befalls men".

Mr Michael Galea

May 19th 2011, 17:21

so true!!

Mrs Rita Dimech Portelli

May 19th 2011, 17:24

What is the world coming to??? How can a man stoop so low as to do what has been done to this poor dog? I am more sad than angry, because I have just lost my beloved dog of 15 years, who always showed me love; the owner of this dog should just have given it away if he did not want the dog anymore. Animal abusers cross a fine line from committing animal abuse to human abuse. This is why animal abusers should be punished and jailed as if the crime committed were on a human.

David Caruana

May 19th 2011, 17:21

Actually, calling these individuals "animals" would be an offense to animals. Animals kill or hurt another animal only to feed or as self-protection. The action of these individuals is worse than any animal's!

Mr Michael Galea

May 19th 2011, 17:21

I agree 100%
If anyone knows anything about what happened Report it to the police so these people can get punished by the law!!

Neville Zammit

May 19th 2011, 19:04

I hope they do so but I also hope that the police will take necessary action. Sometimes animals are disregarded as not so important!

Mr david debattista

May 19th 2011, 20:52

Ms Emma Vella, Ms Emma Xerri, Mr Micheal Vella , Mr A Cardona I totally agree with your posts and comments , the next step is to collect signatures from all over Malta and Gozo and approach our politicians

Mr M Vella***

May 19th 2011, 16:34

Mrs Alice Lodge

May 20th 2011, 10:12

This has nothing to do with religion which should be left out of the equation. It is the basest of human behaviour, a well thought out action of a psychopath who went to great lengths to commit this horrendous torture on a trusting animal and deserves the full force of the law when finally apprehended.

Colin Stanley

May 19th 2011, 16:24

I agree with what you said, but why mention Catholics, who said that the Animal who did this is Catholic.we boast of having a lot of different religions here now.
