Update 2: Dog was shot before being buried alive
A vet has established that a dog that was found buried alive in Birzebbuga this afternoon had been shot.
The dog was found to have a blow on the head - now found to have been caused by a gunshot -and is now being operated.
The discovery was made near Ghar Hasan by officers of the Animal Welfare Department after an anonymous tip-off.
Department officials said they had gone to the site to investigate animal cruelty and heard a dog whining. They lifted a plank of wood which was being held in place by a heavy trunk and found the snout of the dog just sticking out of the soil.
When it was pulled out, the dog, a white and black mixed breed, was found to have had all four legs bound together. Its mouth was also tied.
Despite everything, the animal welfare officers said they were surprised that the dog was friendly and did not try to run away. It is being treated at the animal welfare centre.

A perfectly normal person could kick an animal if he was having a bad day, was in a bad mood, felt jilted. Not right of course but it happens. This case is differrent.
Whoever did this broods over doing evil. Shooting a dog in the head takes effort and planning. As is getting shoe-laces for both sets of limbs and its snout. Star may have been a docile dog but she must have resisted a little at least. This gave an orgasmic pleasure - yes, you read right - to her would-be murderer. This was premeditated and the process enjoyed. Very sick. Then of course he had to bury her and that takes effort. Maybe it was a case of 'folie a` deux', a shared madness with an accomplice. I shouldn't wonder. And you know what?! I reckon he left Star's snout above the soil so she could breathe. What this sick excuse for a man wanted was for Star to die a slow and painful death, with her not being able to move, for obvious reasons, the pain in the head, and not being able to breath properly or bark for help. All planned. And yet it missfired. Star was found and she's fighting back. She has dignity which is something her tormentor will never know. A piece of dry dog-shit in Malta's August sun that he is.
If ever this individual gets to a therapist I'd give anything to be a fly on the wall to listen to his rationalisation. Of course it won't happen.
Apologies if my graphic rambling upset you. It upset me too. But I had to get it out of my system. It is a good way to survive. Taking it out on animals, or anything, is not a good way.
And I'm not even particularly fond of dogs. But hey!........

It is about time to harshen laws with regards to animal cruelty.
I think the animal was not the one who was found buried but the one's who carried out such dispegable act.

It is beyond sick what was done to this helpless and loving dog. And it is unbelievable still that people feel they have the right or liberty to do this to any animal.
Obviously the legal repercussions till now are not severe enough as people continue to act so cruelly. Therefore this incident clearly requires harsher repercussions to be implemented.

It's high time prison sentences AND therapy were introduced for dangerous perpetrators of this kind of animal cruelty. As many have remarked here, this is the work of a sick mind. I fear that such people cannot be made well, once a serial killer, always a serial killer. This is a serial killer in kindergarten. Do we wait till he or she grows up and graduates to kill human beings, or do we take immediate and preventive action?

The great philosoper, leader, thinker and very wise Mahatma Gandhi said, that a nation is judged by the way it treats its animals... Says a lot!
As somebody below said, it is an established facts that the most callous criminals and murderes graduated from an early activity of inflicting such pain on animals.
Many times I caught a small mouse in a trap and felt pity for it and drove to an empty field to set it free there for taking pity on it to kill it. I say HOW COULD YOU!
These people are capable of anything.

This case is being reported abroad, too. This means bad publicitiy for Malta especially considering that our primary industry is the tourism industry.

A cowardly and dispicable act!
What a pity that the outpouring of grief and anger about this dog is not directed towards members of the human race! I make no apology for saying this! You never see such a lot of messages about the daily abortion of millions of babies across the world. Clearly there is much more interest in animals!
Mr martin chetcuti
May 20th 2011, 21:34
@Gerry Cowie
Killing babies is deplorable no doubt about it.
But here we are deploring this HORRIBLE COWARDLY INSANE act, so yes the more messages the better to show that we are STRONG against such acts.
Ms Emma Xerri
May 21st 2011, 06:12
@Martin Chetcuti
Killing babies is a crime all over the world. Abortion however, is not the killing of babies but the termination of unwanted pregnancies, in the first semester when there is nothing to differentiate the embryo from that of any other mammal. This could be done for therapeutic and medical reasons, such as congenital or genetic diseases, the mother's health is in danger from the pregnancy, in cases of rape and where the mother has psychological or mental problem and the forthcoming child is unwanted by its parent. Moreover, abortion saves the lives of thousands of women each year, who would otherwise opt for back-street abortions, but then to the Catholic Church, a fertilised ovum is worth much more then the life of a woman, seeing they are second class beings and who knows, the precious embryo destroyed might have been male, god's favourite gender apparently.
@Gerry
And why shouldn't we be more interested in the welfare of animals - they are far superior to this monkey that we call man that thinks so highly of itself that it stoops so low as to think that it is made in God's own image.
Mr martin chetcuti

On a positive note, judging from the huge amount of comments to condemn this barbaric act , I am sure that we on the whole are an animal loving nation which rightly so stand up and condemn and await punishment whenever some to legged monster hurt our friends.

This is so DEEPLY SHOCKING. It worries me that a person capable of such immense cruelty lives amongst us. A lot of serial killers started out by torturing and killing animals so let's hope the pepetrator is found and punished to the full extent of the law.
Well done to the officers of the Animal Welfare Department. It must be a difficult and often heart-rending job. Keep up the good work!

No man in his right mind with even a little bit of empathy could do this to a helpless animal. I agree with Mr. Littlejohn that it is seriously important to take this person into custody, because who performs atrocities like that is capable of even worse deeds. But for the many "eye for an eye" comments: If we go on lynching as a punishment for lynching, the lynching will never stop. We are human beings and we have come a long way. We should be able to punish in more civilised ways. If the Maltese law doesn´t allow more than a "few hundreds of euros fine" for THIS, then its about high time to change the law.
Mr Joe Xuereb
May 20th 2011, 11:21
Cruelty, especially extreme cruelty to animals, is a symptom. If caught, punish him severely by all means but what 'they' really need is some serious therapy into why they feel so angry that they feel the need to take it out on anything that moves and sometimes even the wall, as in head-banging. I am quite serious. These people are potentially very dangerous - you want proof?! - because they have unresolved issues. The next victim could well be a person. Or indeed themselves because the pressure they impose on themselves is unbearable and there comes a breaking-point. As I said, nobody would want to be a single hair in their body. If someone said that of me - and I'm sure all commenters who feel for this dog - I would be devastated. I couldn't live with myself. It's not a compliment to be told that one wouldn't want to be a hair in whoever's body. If the perpetrator were to read this, 'they' would laugh it off. Well! that's part of the sickness isnt't it? Felony committed, no remorse, as the Judge would say. Sign of madness. So give them a wide berth, let them mix with their own kind, 'strong' in silence. Let them be a community of 'life's losers, forever swirling in a cesspool of their own making'. If they're angry, it's their responsibility to sort themselves out. It won't happen. They're not up to it. They are the damned condemned. I wouldn't want to be in the same room with them, never mind being a single cell in their body.

please provide more updates Times of Malta and thank you for reporting on this.
to all those who would love to adopt this dog: thank you for your kindness. since more than one home is being offered; may i remind you that there are hundreds of other dogs awaiting a kind home. you can find them in the sanctuaries across malta and you can even find strays.. so please think of them if you can adopt :) big things can be done in one dog's name! such as starting to volunteer at a sanctuary in his name or donating in his name. look up the patrick miracle on facebook to see what one starved dog started!

This is all caused by parents who grow their children without dogs or any other animals in the house. These children grow with a hatred to animals because of the anti-animals brain washing their parents impose on them during their growth.
One can really see a difference from a child who has been grown with an animal in house and one with not. A child learns to share its food and things from an early stage if it's grown with a dog and learns that the world does not swirl only around him/her but has to respect other living beings.

I tend to disagree. We don't own a dog or any other pet but I can't imagine my son doing something like that. On the other hand, the bastard who did this in fact 'owned' a dog and see where it led. It's all a matter of education and upbringing and you don't need to own a pet in order to respect animals Just remembering that these creatures have feelings is enough to treat them with kindness and love.

My Alsation mixed breed dog (female) went missing 3 months ago and this is the sort of thing that worries me. We have not been able to find her & the thing that upsets me most, as she has not turned up at any of the sancturies, is that someone has got hold of her and is mistreating her. I really hope she is not shut up in someones garage or tied up on someones roof. Like this dog, she is very friendly and would not be agressive.

Hats off to the Animal Welfare Department officials who went to such lengths to save this dog and other animals every day.
Last summer I called them for a kitten trapped in a car engine and they didn't give up until they had rescued it. This is the only good aspect of this terrible case of animal abuse. I just wish the perpetrator could be tied, gagged and buried alive, just to see what he put this poor dog through.
Mr Joe Xuereb
May 20th 2011, 00:46
The good news is that the dog has survived his ordeal and hopefully will heal sufficiently to have a contented rest of his life.
To the animals - sorry, animals! - who did this. You're to be pitied. To everyone else who wants all sorts of misadventures to be visited on the perpetrator/s - be angry by all means but - and here's another piece of good news - these people who tortured an animal are tortured animals themselves. Think about it. Would you want to be a single hair in their body? No, I didn't think you would. They are a punishment unto themselves. As of the here and now and probably forever. What we call 'life's losers'. Most people live a life of quiet dignity. The undignified, we must give a wide berth to as much as we can. But remember always, you wouldn't want to be a single hair in their body.
There! I feel better already. And I haven't lifted a finger. And the muscles round my stomach are perfectly relaxed.

No one can ever imagine the cruelty to animals on this island. Two months ago I found a dog in Lija which is a four way lane. A woman and myself stopped all the traffic to rescue this poor dog. I will not give the breed of this dog as I am pretty sure that the owner kept this dog for breeding for dog fighting. Till this day I am helping this wonderful dog to get out of her deep depression but happily to say that she looks me in the eye now though she does not wag her tail yet. The day will come when my baby will start following me and wag her tail when she sees humans. Everyone said I am crazy to adopt such a dog as they are known for fighting but believe me shes so docile and I have taken photos of her when she was at worst with depression. I will never forgive the owner for making this wonderful creature suffer in this way and I beg the authorities to take immediate action against these dictators to nature.

What sort of human being could do this sort of thing to a dog? No.... What am I saying? Did I say human being? This person is not homo sapiens sapiens.... Something's wrong with this person - he / she must be Neanderthal - homo neanderthalensis, and should not be deemed worthy of being called civilised.
I hope the perpetrator experiences a hefty fine and some jai time, whilst I hope the dog goes through a speedy recovery and finds himself a loving family. The Times should see the story ends happily for the poor creature by helping out in this regard.

V Bartolo, I can understand how you are feeling right now! I had to put down my labrador 15 years ago on the 17th May and I still miss him and still cry for him! •In one study, 70% of animal abusers also had records for other crimes. Domestic violence victims whose animals were abused saw the animal cruelty as one more violent episode in a long history of indiscriminate violence aimed at them and their vulnerability.
•Investigation of animal abuse is often the first point of social services intervention for a family in trouble.
•For many battered women, pets are sources of comfort providing strong emotional support: 98% of Americans consider pets to be companions or members of the family.
•Animal cruelty problems are people problems. When animals are abused, people are at risk

Franco Farrugia, "trid tizloq fin-niexef"!!! What does hunting have to do with this!
J C Navarro, the disgraceful acts you refer to refer to poachers. Therefore what exactly do the law-abiding hunters have to do with this. Why have you roped in hunting into the matter?! I assure you that the law-abiding hunter neither shoots at protected birds nor treat dogs in such a heartless manner.
Finally, I can see that many have been carried away too much! Such cruel acts are to be condemned AND NOT suggested to be used on the culprit! Civilised individuals do not act in such a disgraceful manner.

I do feel sorry for the animal ... but more importantly, the fact that people can get away with brutality with living creatures, irrespective of size might lead to brutality on other human beings eventually.
Such malicious behaviour is harmful to the person who commits it, the persons that witness it and the victim that suffers it.
It should be given 0 tolerance!

Can somebody please tell me how we can get in contact with the caretakers and maybe meet? Thank you for helping me on this matter! Email me on ohmaninriga@hotmail.com

i find this horrifying and totally condemn it. we need to have harsh laws where the cruel person/s who did this is CAUGHT, SERVES A JAIL TERM, PAYS A HEFTY FINE which should go towards animal welfare costs, and is REFORMED. if this person does not realize the horror of his actions he/she will do them again to another living creature. people this cruel will not hesitate to harm humans. however i respectfully disagree with violent comments... violence brings more violence. you cannot give a lesson to others about violence while being violent yourself. please also take a moment to think of the thousands of other animals killed daily TO PROVIDE MEAT FOR YOUR PLATES. all are sentient beings and all should be protected. what's the difference between the hurt this dog felt and the hurt the cow pig chicken etc feel when they are killed so you can eat them?

I often think if animals misbehave very badly do their elders or fellow animals say to them stop it -as you are behaving like a human? If man is a dog's best friend then a alot of dogs have a big problem and anyway look at what dog spelt backwards spells!
Franco Farrugia
May 19th 2011, 18:19
The more the Courts and the Police continue being soft on these louts and criminals that are behind these horrific acts, the more we will have of such instances. The more the Authorities continue turning their attention away from these problems and make out that things are not becoming even more serious in Malta, as regards animal cruelty, the more we will be seeing such atrocities. Animal-welfare has to be seen in a holistic context and it encompasses everything that has to do with animals: be it hunting and trapping, accepting and visiting animal-circuses at Christmastime, the way we transport animals from one place to another, the way we keep and manage our disgusting abattoir, etc ...
Mary Vella
May 19th 2011, 18:32
In agreement with your comment Mr. Farrugia. we all vent our rage when something like this is shown, but how many of us still go to the circus and worse take our children to see and laugh at those poor creatures forced to do antics that are so unnatural to them? how many of us eat meat not giving one thought of what that poor animal want through just so we can eat it? how many of us donate to sanctuaries or even volunteer?
it's quite easy to rant and write violent comments on what one would like to do to this person. it would be better if we can see what to do to make this world a better place for animals and humans alike.

As Ms. Emma Xerri said, it is about time the authorities did something serious to put these sick barbaric acts to an end. Create laws that allow the courts to dish out sentences that are actually a deterrent. I don't think i remember one speech by any of our self righteous politicians that ever focussed on animal welfare in this country. Ok we got an Animal Welfare department, however, unless this department is backed up by tough laws, nothing is going to change in this country!
Shame on politicians on both sides for having done NOTHING to toughen up the law to help the plight of animals in this country. As i said before, it just goes to show that animals don't vote...but we do and as Ms. Xerri said, the next politician to come knocking on my door begging for my vote is going to face a barrage of questions about animal welfare in this country!
Mr david debattista
May 19th 2011, 17:44
Ok We all love our four legged friends and animals in general. We vent our anger but this alone will not change anything . Let us unite put our heads together and think what we can do to stop this. Any ideas ?

May 19th 2011, 18:19
We need to put this issue - animal cruelty, animal welfare on the political agenda. Next election, the party that puts this on their political platform, including concrete proposals as well as budgets for education, rehabilitation of animals and harsh punishement and re-education of those convicted of animal cruelty, would get our votes. We need a strong lobby group to speak on behalf of the innocent and the voiceless - our defenceless animals companions and all animals in general.

May 19th 2011, 17:17
The people responsible for this brutal act should get the same treatment as they did to this poor dog!!
Malta should have harder laws against people like this! The Death Penalty should be introduced for the ones who do cruelty to animals!!!!
Mr Joseph Aquilina
May 19th 2011, 17:16
Seriously!!! We have to have harsher punishments for these type of crimes. Anyone who can do that to animal can do the same to a person, a child, or a baby. There is no difference.
Ms Emma Xerri
May 19th 2011, 18:36
While I agree that people that could do this to a dog or an animal could also to the same to a person or child, this is not the reason that they should be caught and punished for animals have a right to life in their own right and freedom from suffering and pain, thirst and hunger like the rest of us. Basing everything on our own egocentric views shows why we have this problems in the first place.
An anthropocentric universe (or a man centred universe) as preached by most of the world's religions, has caused a lot of harm to all creatuers on our planet and is also making us forget that we are part and parcel of the whole and whatever affects one species, will rebound on all the others, including man. It is not true that this earth and all there is in it was made for man to use and master - we are part of nature and cannot live outside of it. We are doing this at our own pepril. As the Bible says, 'what befalls animals, also befalls men".

I agree :
These kind of sick people exist in all the countries - it has nothing to do with religion - Last week ,unfortunately i watched a sick egyptian boy throwing a poor dog from the roof .. Reason was that he bit his brother.. And it's been recorded and can be found on youtube.. So, being Catholic or Muslim or whatever religion.. It's not important... If someone is sick..He is sick!! That's it!
I dont agree :
'' At least it wasn't a baby dumped in a rubbish can '' ..
Dog , baby , molested child - Shouldnt make a difference for us.. It's all the same crime against living creatures.. Doing something like this on a dog should not be less important then doing on a baby or child.. They are all defendless!!
Mr Andrea Bruno
May 19th 2011, 17:03
I really disagree with the saying "qisek annimal" because it is definitely and understatement to animals. I truly believe animals are far better than human beings. I'd much rather be surrounded by a hundred dogs, than a hundred humans.
Mrs Rita Dimech Portelli
May 19th 2011, 17:24
What is the world coming to??? How can a man stoop so low as to do what has been done to this poor dog? I am more sad than angry, because I have just lost my beloved dog of 15 years, who always showed me love; the owner of this dog should just have given it away if he did not want the dog anymore. Animal abusers cross a fine line from committing animal abuse to human abuse. This is why animal abusers should be punished and jailed as if the crime committed were on a human.
Michelle Caruana
May 19th 2011, 16:57
Please, anyone who have seen this brutal act happening, kindly and anonymously, report what you've seen and who are these ANIMALS because they are not worth calling them persons. So PLEASE do report such acts as these incidents need to stop once and for all and the ones responsible should be penalized and punished.
David Caruana
May 19th 2011, 17:21
Actually, calling these individuals "animals" would be an offense to animals. Animals kill or hurt another animal only to feed or as self-protection. The action of these individuals is worse than any animal's!
Mr Michael Galea
May 19th 2011, 17:21

I hope they do so but I also hope that the police will take necessary action. Sometimes animals are disregarded as not so important!
Joanna Borg
May 19th 2011, 16:56
What surprises me the most is that people who witness such disgusting behaviour don't come forward and testify against these savages. The police department should offer anonymity to anyone who can identify or at least provide information that leads to an arrest. The person who provided the 'anonymous tip-off' must surely know something, even if it's a licence plate number. Shame on anyone who treats animals in this way and to those who look the other way. Can I suggest the state offers a reward to anyone who reports such behaviour?
Mr R Calleia
May 19th 2011, 16:55

May 19th 2011, 16:49
I understand the sentimental comments and fully agree with them but for sure this will not change a thing. Feeling the rage and the need for justice will remain a feeling unless something proper is done. Months ago were other atrocities by these genetic garbage in the form of humans. What needs to be done to hinder such events from occuring is that the authorities especially our well paid politicians just push up the punishments for well and good. Well and good means fines at least reaching 25,000 euros together with jail time of at least 3 years or else 5 years community work. Suspended sentences and other rubbish should be removed once and for all except in trivial cases.
I wont even imagine what else is or has been done that we do not know about. This is what wardens and law enforcement officers need to be vigilant about and not whether a car crossed the parking line and other mediocrities. One more thing , i would like to say thanks to the one who called and saved this dog's life.
Mr david debattista

May 19th 2011, 16:24
I cannot believe how many sick so called '' human'' 's are living with us ... This cannot be accepted, cannot be tolerated.. This has nothing different then murder / attempting to murder and should be punished accordingly..
Ms Ellison Galea

And then we are told that, because of "our christian values", we ought to vote 'No' in the referendum! Where are our priorities?
Mr Matthew Grima
May 19th 2011, 16:28
What's the referendum got to do with this exactly?

Words fail me what is going on a very sad day for the Maltese Islands two horrifying stories which are certainly going to further lowers our standing around the World, first the hunters shooting at Storks then this poor dog.

May 19th 2011, 16:18
I wonder what it will take for our dear authorities to make penalties for cruelty to animals much much much harsher. These cases are becoming more frequent (just read today's headlines) and more and more disgusting, yet we never seem to hear of anyone getting caught. On the rare occasion they do get caught, they get away with a slap on the wrist. I feel ashamed to be Maltese when reading such disgusting articles and even more disgusted at the fact that nothing serious is being done about it!
Ms Nicola Portelli
May 19th 2011, 16:18
Absolutely disgusting! You can't possibly be human to do such a thing! These so called 'people' must be kept far away from society. If they are capable of being cruel to an innocent animal can you imagine what they are capable of doing to other human beings that cross their path.

The person who done this should be beaten triple times more this dog was beaten , legs and hands bound together, and buried alive in the same spot that he tried to bury this dog.
Miguel Sant
May 19th 2011, 16:12
I'd love to see the person that did this being given the same treatment. Not only i would love it but i would pay just to see him suffer like the dog did.
Mr M Vella***
May 19th 2011, 16:34
Miguel,I agree with you 1000000%,I'll pay every penny I have to get my hands on the person who did this and castrate him myself.

Police should do their utmost to get the culprit and I hope if caught he will go through all this himself. Poor creature, they are so kind friendly to humans. I hope not a suspended sentence if caught. Any information about animal cruelty should be rewarded and a very well done to the Animal Welfare Dept.
Mrs Alice Lodge
May 20th 2011, 10:12
This has nothing to do with religion which should be left out of the equation. It is the basest of human behaviour, a well thought out action of a psychopath who went to great lengths to commit this horrendous torture on a trusting animal and deserves the full force of the law when finally apprehended.
Mr Jimmie Rowe
May 19th 2011, 16:06
I would have never thought that some individuals---Catholics? would do such a Bartbaric thing with a defenceless animal. This article has already travelled half way around the world projecting a bad image on your nation my friend who ever it is. During the war people like you would be shot for degrading your little island and i would have like to take the first aim. Disgusting behaviour, the picture speaks for itself. The trouble is your countrymen outside Malta Oz, Canada, the UK, will suffer verbail abuse due such actions by mindless individuals. Think about it you know it makes sence.
Colin Stanley

I agree with what you said, but why mention Catholics, who said that the Animal who did this is Catholic.we boast of having a lot of different religions here now.

I hope that the perpetrator burns in hell for what he has done to an innocent, defenceless creature! Dogs are truly man's best friend! The perpetrator should be punished; not with a simple fine but with imprisonment! When will we learn to respect animals?!!!
