Forthcoming environmental EU-related events

‘Water governance – meeting the challenges of global change’, June 5 – 11, Obergurgl, Austria.

Sustainable management of water resources in times of global change is one of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century. Europe has a strong and growing community of scholars working in the field of water governance and policy. However, the community of scholars working on water resources from a social science perspective is quite fragmented. Conferences and workshops on water have been organised in the law and policy fields for some time, but integrated approaches have been rare. This conference can be seen as addressing the lack of research on multi-level, trans-disciplinary approaches to water governance.

‘International conference on sustainability in energy and buildings’, June 1 – 3, Marseille.

Researchers, engineers and industrialists working in a broad range of renewable energy and sustainability fields will give presentations, which will explore ideas about the future of intelligent sustainable building and smart renewable energy technology. Topics will include the application of intelligent sensing, control, optimisation and the technology of sustainable buildings. The conference will be structured around plenary keynote talks by experts, oral presentations, invited sessions and workshops. These formats will enable participants to hear and learn about the latest research, and to network with others working in the field.

‘Conference on Mediterranean climate variability and predictability’, June 6 – 9, Lecce, Italy.

Sponsored by the European Science Foundation, the Medclivar (Mediterranean climate variability and predictability) programme aims to coordinate and promote the study of the Mediterranean climate. The peculiar geographical location and the topographical features of the Mediterranean area make it a region which is highly sensitive to global climate change.

The conference will present available knowledge on future climate change at the regional level, analyse climate change impacts on Mediterranean societies and present and discuss results of international and national research projects. The event will also seek to identify research hotspots and critical issues, bring together experts from complementary fields of climate research and discuss future climate research targets in the Mediterranean region.

Topics to be covered at the conference include Mediterranean climate: relevant and important scientific issues; paleoclimatic evidence from the Mediterranean region; synoptic patterns: climatology and trends; the circulation of the Mediterranean Sea: trends and changes; extremes and impacts of climate variability in the Mediterranean region; aerosols chemistry and climate; modelling of the Mediterranean climate system; and the climate of the Mediterranean region in future climate projections.
