Nato has denied a claim by Libyan state television that Gaddafi forces had hit one of its warships.

Libya said last night that its forces had hit a Nato warship off the rebel-held Libyan harbour town of Misrata. Nato said the report was an invention.

It said the warship was hit during an exchange of gunfire. "Our forces fired (at warships) and hit one directly and severely" the Libyan report said. It did not identify the warship.
