The 2011 Malta Urban Jungle Middle Distance Triathlon will be held in Birżebbuġa on May 29.

Race director Charles Demanuele said the response has been strong and so far 21 triathletes have registered for the arduous task of swimming 1.9km, cycling 90km and then finishing the race with a marathon run (42kms).

“Registrations will close this week but we’re happy to say that until now we already have 21 triathletes who will be doing the triathlon,” he said.

“Triathlon is a growing sport and this is also reflected in our country.

“We can see that there’s added participation in most races held here during the season.”

The Middle Distance Triathlon, also known as the Half Ironman, has now reached its fifth year.

As in previous races, participation will also be open to those indi-viduals who practise any of the three sport involved – swimming, cycling and running. They can join forces in a relay team.

“Yes, the popularity trend has also been extended to the relays this year,” Demanuele added.

“We have more teams registered for the race than we had in previous editions.”

The organisers will be assisted by the Malta Triathlon Association and Birkirkara SJ to ensure that rules are adhered to and the required safety measures are all in place.

Registrations close on Friday evening at Al Fresco, Birżebbuġa.

The race on May 29 starts at 6.30 a.m. with the swim segment.
