Justice and Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici was present this afternoon during the police questioning of a prisoner who claimed to know who killed Raymond Caruana in 1986.
However no new information about the case emerged, informed sources said.
The prisoner, Kenneth Gafa, who is awaiting trial for the murder of his former girlfriend Christine Sammut in Mgarr last December, had wanted to meet the minister to hand over information he claimed to have about the 1986 Caruana murder.
The police interviewed Mr Gafa yesterday and again today. Dr Mifsud Bonnici was present for today's interview at police headquarters.
Gafa was just 11 when Caruana was gunned down at the Gudja PN club.
GOVERNMENT STATEMENT
In a statement, the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs said that this afternoon, the 35-year-old prisoner was interviewed at police headquarters in the presence of the inquiring Magistrate, Edwina Grima and Police Commissioner John Rizzo. On the advice of the investigating officer, minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici also attended.
Prior to the interview, the prisoner spoke for a number of hours with the Police Commissioner and was offered the opportunity to speak, on his own, with the Magistrate. He could also make a sworn declaration.
During the interview the prisoner opted not to say anything about his claims but only spoke about conditions at the prisons and asked for prison privileges.
He was told he would be granted what he was entitled for, without privileges.
The ministry reiterated the declaration it made yesterday that it was not within the minister's competence to investigate crimes. His presence at the interview today was not in an investigative role, but was meant only to shed light on the Caruana murder, if possible.
