I predict Malta will have divorce. It will be as a result of the referendum or some time in the future. A negative vote will surely result in, at least, one political party having it as one of the items on the list of “promises” for future general elections.

Strong marriages are never affected by any divorce legislation. Alternatively, the Church may choose to make it easier and faster to obtain an annulment. Committed spouses will have no interest in that either. There are many factors contributing to the rate of divorces in other countries. Marriage preparation is practically non-existent and that surely is one of them.

In Malta, despite the organisation of Cana courses, we are seeing more marriages breaking down. Even the government has taken notice of this phenomenon.

There is a need, an obligation, for a more focused effort to better prepare citizens for marriage. It’s obvious that the failure rate of marriages can serve as a good indication.

At the same time the anti-divorce movement needs to clarify who will be accepted in the Church after a divorce. In some interpretations both spouses have to apply for a divorce. This sounds erroneous; in most cases it is one spouse who applies.

It has been mentioned, as well, that divorced Catholics could still receive Holy Communion if they lead a celibate life. If one spouse files for divorce will that spouse be excluded even if remaining celibate? Some direction needs to be given if one spouse remains celibate and the other does not.

Let’s forget name calling. We are faced with enough marriage breakdowns. It’s time for both the Church and the government to work with and educate those contemplating marriage. What preparation is being given has failed too many couples.
