In view of the alarming number of personal and shop robberies over the past year or so, I would like to suggest the following as a possible and proven deterrent.
It is a well-known fact that all those engaged in committing crime are scared off by a loud alarm or noise. I would therefore suggest that shops and other vulnerable premises be fitted with a loud alarm system and/or flashing light, preferably inside or outside the entrance to their premises. This could be activated instantly either by hand or foot. Similarly, pocket-sized alarms could be carried by pedestrians and others. These are also easily activated. These pocket-sized alarms were issued successfully to Blackpool Transport bus drivers about 10 years ago when there was a series of driver hold-ups. A large prominent notice at the premises entrance stating that an alarm system is in operation will also serve as a deterrent.
Perhaps it may pay the government to subsidise these devices.
