Updated: Bus, 4 cars, crash in Mgarr - no serious injuries
A bus and four cars collided at Triq ix-Xatt, Mgarr, Gozo at around 4.30 p.m .today but no one was seriously injured.
It is understood, however that three persons, including the bus driver and a tourist guide, were treated in hospital.
People on the scene said the bus, carrying tourists, was being driven downhill towards the harbour when, possibly after mechanical failure, it hit two cars which were pushed onto the other cars. The bus crossed the road and came to a stop against a wall, blocking the busy artery.
The eyewitnesses said that had the bus not crossed the road, it would have risked crashing down into the valley which is parallel to the road.

Why is everyone concerned with who crossed the line etc?? Whatever happened its a miracle no one is seriously injured or even dead. I think that the driver was pretty much sober and super sharp to manage to stop the bus. What comes to my mind is that maybe buses are being neglected since there will soon be the change over to arriva. However at this point I am just glad no one is hurt.

The bus will be of course insured! And please it would be better if people stop coming out with silly ideas of buses crashing for insurance money. Every vechile is prone to mechanical faults, no one can blame older buses, when Toyota had faults in their design their cars were not old! And none of the drivers or owners are careless enough to let their bus fall to pieces whilst endangering even their lives!

What I want to know is who crossed the single white line, and risked his life and that of others!!
Totally irresponsible.
Thank God no one was seriously hurt.

I did not see the crash and I am not in any way an expert in this field, but could it be ANOTHER(5th one if this is the case) bus without adequate brakes? Probably.

I do hope that we will come to know what or who brought about this incident. I do not like to be told of anything happening and then STOP. If the incident or accident is worth mentioning in the news, the public should be given updated details according to law or regulations.

Too many accidents involving buses these days. It’s hard to believe that service and maintenance are being carried out on these buses knowing that their days are counted. The authorities have to make sure this is being done before luck turn it’s back on us and we end up with a tragedy.

It would be interesting to know if anyone involved driving any of the vehicles was breathalysed and if insurance papers were valid for each vehicle.

Mr Cassar
Its better to check the facts before commenting. Those cars you see were parked. The bus had a mechanical fault and the driver was lucid enough to steer the bus to the right hand side or else the bus would have had a great drop.

why would it be interesting?

it would be very interesting Mr. Cassar to have confirmation no one was injured, before blurting out such accusations. doh!

Mr. C Cassar, accidents happen not only when people are drunk, the bus was full of turists and the driver was brave enough in avoiding a much serious accident,as the bus developed a brake failure. If he had continued to drive on his side the bus would have had 4 storey fall. i don't think that drunk people are concious enough to think fast in such situations!!!

Don't jump to conclusions, this was truly a genuine accident, there was no need for a breathalyser it seems that the bus developed some engine trouble and thank God that the driver was a very good driver cause if he didn't turn the bus to the wrong side of the road and hit the wall it would have fallen on the other side and the height there is more than 20 meters. I happen to know the driver and he had never had an accident before.

Typical Maltese responses. EVERY driver should be breathalysed when someone is hurt at the very least. It takes 5 minutes to perform and if the driver has nothing to hide then no problem is there?
One day in about 50 years, Malta will join the rest of the EU in road legislation that's in existence in 2011.

it would be very interesting if for once in your commeting life you did not question events as if you are the Pope and we are the common sinners.
Be it hunting, be it a accident...all you're interested in is accusing others of abuse and nagging...my my...your life seems to be a lost battle of the naggers...

Well I agree with some of the comments here, not the one about testing alcohol levels. One thing i would like to pointg out is that the bus should have been fitted with an emergency air brake that should stop the bus in the case of brake failure which would have helped the driver. Having said that the driver did a good job in steering the bus into the wall to make it stop, he was not drunk as it's hard to think so fast in these situations even when sober let alone drunk. Mr. C. Cassar you should think before you speak sir as your comment isin't valid in any way shape or form.
