The number of marriage annulments by the state and the Church in the years between 1990 and 2010 reached 1,862, Communications Minister Austin Gatt told Parliament on Monday in reply to a question by Opposition Whip Joe Mizzi.

All marriage annulments were recorded in the Public Registry.

Dr Gatt pointed out that religious annulments invariably needed to be ratified by the Court of Appeal before being noted in the registry.
