Former world rally champion Ari Vatanen was due to undergo surgery in a Marseille hospital after an accident in Corsica.

The 59-year-old Finn was a passenger in a non-competition Peugeot being driven by his son Max ahead of a stage of the Rally of Corsica.

He complained of neck pains after their car spun off the road between Barchetta and La Porta, ending up on its roof. Vatanen, who did not lose consciousness, requested to be flown to Marseille for a minor surgical procedure, organisers said. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The Rally of Corsica is part of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, the rival circuit to the world rally championship.
