Cable and telecommunications company Melita has appointed world leader Cisco to usher in the roll-out of a next-generation cable broadband technology across the Maltese islands by the summer.

The implementation of ‘DOCSIS 3.0’ cable technology, including high-speed cable modems, will enable Melita to providebroadband speeds of up to 100 megabits per second to anybusiness or home.

The ‘Fibre Power’ technologywill help Melita facilitate the convergence of data, voice and video over an Internet Protocol-based infrastructure.

This investment follows upgrades completed last year to address the demand for IP traffic and resolve areas of congestion. Melita has invested over €11 million to strengthen its core network.

Through this upgrade, Melita was also able to double the upload speeds for almost all its subscribers to satisfy the demand for user-generated content uploads.

The upgrades on Melita’s broadband internet network have prepared 50,000 households and businesses for Fibre Power broadband internet.

To mark its 20th anniversary, Melita is offering customers a free internet upgrade to 20 Mega bits per second for a week.
