Fabio Spiteri will be travelling to the Canary Islands later this month for the Lanzarote Ironman, considered by many as the world’s toughest triathlon.
The Lanzarote Ironman, on May 21, is a gruesome race consisting of a 3.8km swim, a 180km cycle and a marathon (42km) run.
Spiteri has been training hard for the Ironman, practising regularly all year round and intensifying his programme in the last three months to peak at this month’s challenge itself.
The Lanzarote race is known to be the most demanding Ironman in the calendar due to several uphills and also the high winds that hit the island all year round.
This will not be Spiteri’s first Ironman. He covered the distance first last year in Austria where he clocked a remarkable 9 hours 52 minutes, thus placing himself among the top 50 in his age group.
This time, Spiteri, who is sponsored by Garmin and The Cyclist Corractec, will be dedicating all his efforts to generate funds for worthy causes, namely, Hope and Inspire.
Hope is the social arm of Gift of Life Foundation which supports mothers in crisis pregnancies. Inspire works to see the complete inclusion of disabled people in the community.
Those interested in helping Spiteri raise funds may do so by sending an SMS (with the word ‘Fabio’) at 5061-7359 to donate €2.33 or 5061-8080 (€4.66).
