Blue flag status for two Malta beaches
St George's and Bugibba bays have again been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag Status while Golden and Mellieha bays have been reconfirmed beaches of quality, Nature Trust, the local representative of Blue Flag International said.
Blue Flag is an international Eco Label accessing beaches on management, health and safety, information and education and bathing water quality.
As of June 1, there will be 638 marinas and 3,012 beaches awarded the Blue Flag worldwide.
Each year, national Blue Flag juries assess candidates to ensure they meet all of the criteria for beaches and marinas at the national and international level. Those that do are then forwarded to the international jury, which focuses on set criteria that vary year to year, before giving a final verdict.

Lets make an experement.Next time you go to a sandy beach, even a blue flag beach, take a very small jar with you and fill half of it with sand,..now go to the water`s edge and fill the jar with sea water and shake it,the water will become very, very dirty.Throw the water away ,fill again and repeat the sequence.........after 10 times the water still remained dirty.Do not get me wrong it`s nobody`s fault,..what I mean is that although the sea can have a Blue Flag the sand is very, very dirty. We might think that toddlers playing with sand is OK,...but is it?

First the Maltese need to learn how to look after their own environment. A big change in culture is required for the locals who are used to taking whatever they can from the environment rather than giving anything back.

We should aim to secure blue flag status to most of our beaches if we want to be competitive in the industry...............................
