The Labour Party has denied that its leader’s driver, paid by the government, is carrying out work for the Labour Party.

“I categorically deny that Joseph Muscat’s driver is doing some other job other than being the leader’s driver,” a party spokesman said.

The allegations were made by the Nationalist Party on Tuesday night in a reaction to the PL’s parliamentary motion against Cabinet’s “insensitive, arbitrary and non-transparent behaviour” over ministers’ pay rises.

The PN said that, while Dr Muscat spoke about transparency, this did not apply to him. “When he became Leader of the Opposition he picked a person from the civil service to be his driver, paid by the government. Paid by public funds, this driver is today carrying out work for the Labour Party,” the PN claimed.

Faced with Labour’s denial, the PN said: “The information that Dr Muscat’s driver paid by the people’s taxes is doing work for the Labour Party came from the Labour Party itself. It is Dr Muscat’s responsibility to be transparent and explain the exact role of Philip Camilleri within the party.”

The PN said former leader Alfred Sant also had a driver assigned to him and paid from public funds but he “rarely, if ever” served as Dr Sant’s driver and worked full-time for the PL.
