Matsec definitely in need of reform

But Matsec does need reforming, not just because of the years which have passed since this experience began. We often hear complaints that the questions are not clear enough, seemingly aimed at trying to “trick” candidates instead of offering them the opportunity to show their level of preparation.
Moreover, mishaps which can only be described as mistakes still crop up – a danger which is obviously not exclusive to our board! But the essential thing is then to own up – and try to compensate students, not forgetting that their concentration can suffer considerably even though the actual number of marks directly concerned may be minimal.
As “proof” I would like to give a recent example. The April 28 intermediate accounting paper (unfortunately as usual) included references to topics which are not specified in the syllabus – if not outrightly excluded. Question 2 probably attracted a majority of candidates since the subject (control accounts) is usually straightforward. Unfortunately – due to a strange slip at setting stage – an error of principle is required for the necessary balancing: treating refunds to customers as a credit entry!
Based on past experience, I cannot expect a logical reply – probably some insipid excuse (just like the classic “no candidate rose to the occasion” when essential information was described as having been purposely omitted!).
Two suggestions. Papers should be distributed to all establishments with candidates as soon as practical after the sessions, instead of having to wait until the monopolist publisher decides whether to print. My second is more “disruptive all subjects should become joint ventures between Matsec and other boards (universities or otherwise) with an established name in the particular area.
