MARSEC-XL, a not for profit innovation hot-spot in the marine industry based in Senglea, has attended the exclusive 5th Linux Foundation collaboration summit in the United States, which celebrated the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Linux operating system by Linus Torvalds.
Research engineer Zak Borg represented the Maltese foundation that has just launched MARSSA (MARine Systems Software Architecture), the first open source community-driven project in the marine industry.
Open source and collaboration was the key theme behind the summit, highlighting the various open source projects and ways in which the community is able to contribute and collaborate with such initiatives. The projects under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation add a lot of value to the marine industry and a yacht running a private open source cloud is something which MARSEC-XL is working hard on through the MARSSA project, the Maltese foundation said.
Among the collection of events, workgroups and exciting announcements, Jim Zemlin, the executive director of the Linux Foundation and Carol Smith on behalf of Google’s open source initiatives gave very interesting keynote speeches, bringing home the hype and positive vibe which open source brings about through the community driven approach.
MARSSA will help revolutionise the marine industry, allowing people from all over the globe to collaborate and bring forward this exciting project in a true open source fashion, the organisation said.
MARSEC-XL has just launched a dedicated site for this open source project at www.marssa.org. The collaboration platform is open to anyone interested, allowing individuals to gather a better grasp of the project and start contributing through the community portal.
