MaltaPost has been ordered to pay €14,000 to an employee after an industrial tribunal found that he was discriminated against.
Harry Calleja, a senior manager (delivery) had told the tribunal that he was informed by e-mail from the CEO that his post had been abolished. He therefore had no choice but to apply for other positions as part of a reorganisation of the company. As a result he became an assistant manager, going down two ranks, while other people retained their posts, or improved.
The tribunal ruled that Mr Calleja was discriminated upon. Although his post had been abolished, his work was now being done by other persons. While Mr Calleja was demoted, other workers had been appointed to new posts without an interview. The management should have offered him a new post which was at least one grade higher than what he had had.
His downgrading, the tribunal said, was discriminatory
