Special air fare for referendum voters
Air Malta is offering return tickets at €35 to people living overseas and are eligible to vote at the May 28 referendum.
The price is inclusive of taxes and other charges.
The travel arrangements for eligible voters – those whose name appears on the Electoral Register published in October 2010 – are for the period between May 20 and June 5, both days inclusive.
The offer is also valid for eligible voters married to foreigners, studying, working or undergoing medical treatment abroad as well as their dependents. Reservations, which opened at noon yesterday, can be made at Air Malta’s call centre on (+356) 2364 5321 for overseas calls and on 2364 5321 for local calls. The overall cost will be borne by the government. Bringing over 3,057 people to vote at the 2008 general election had cost the taxpayer over €1 million. It had cost the country more than €442,000 to fly 1,377 people to Malta to vote in the 2009 European Parliament election – €321 per passenger.

Free holidays for those who are lucky enough to have Airmalta flying to their doorstep! If no Airmalta service, then tough!! So much for one man one vote! We should join the ranks of civilised countries and start voting in our embassies.

We appreciate that the government subsidises these flights so that we can come and vote, however, the lines have been engaged since yesterday and I could not get through. I sent someone to the sales office in Malta on my behalf and it turns out that so far only one class (which is just a few seats) has been authorised by the government and most dates from UK are already fully booked. The closest available date was 1 seat on the 23rd, which for people who have a real job or are doing a real degree is too early as we cannot be expected to take 1 whole week off to vote. Hopefully the government will authorise more classes so that we are all given an equal opportunity.

Maybe organize special flights to accommodate you voters overseas. You might have to pay full fare like the rest of us do if you are that interested in voting in the divorce referendum. Most people would not go across town to vote and yet you guys are willing to take a 3 hour flight, just to vote on the divorce referendum? Who are you kidding. Everybody would like a free or reduced ticket. The GonziPN machine is working.

Please stop stoning the messenger and direct your views towards the message. Whether we are entitled for a subsidised trip or not should be treated when budgeting finance are being discussed and not when somebody is feeling green over what they are missing out. As far as what is best for us to vote about the divorce issue....well in my opinion we have experienced the outcome of divorce a few years ahead of those living in Malta..which means that we might have a little more experience about this issue...so lets treat the issue of divorce in a more practical manner please.
