Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said today that the audit report on the operations of the VAT department, tabled in Parliament on Monday, was not related to the cases of fraud in the department.

The report had found a lack of accountability and lack of awareness of internal fraud.

Mr Fenech said that while better controls may have helped detect fraud, the VAT fraud case was about collusion.

He said that following the presentation of the report, the department had reviewed and strengthened its operations.
