Sheffield United responded to their relegation from English football’s second-tier Championship by sacking manager Micky Adams yesterday.

Both Adams and assistant Alan Cork were dismissed by club owner Kevin McCabe.

United, who finished second bottom in the division, were already struggling when Adams was appointed on December 30, making him the Blades’ third boss of a season where Kevin Blackwell was sacked and Gary Speed left to become manager of Wales.

Adams guided United to just four wins in his 24 matches in charge as the Malta Tourism Authority-sponsored outfit dropped into English football’s third division.

“Micky is an honourable, hard-working and honest man who has had difficult circumstances to deal with from the moment he came in,” said McCabe in a club statement.

“No one can criticise the effort he and Alan put in.”

Adams wanted to stay at Bramall Lane but McCabe added: “The fact remains that we have been relegated. With that in mind I feel that in order to give ourselves the best opportunity we should make a clean sweep at the top and start afresh next season.”

Adams said: “I am very disappointed with the decision but I still wish Sheffield United all the best.

“I am a Blade and will always be a Blade so I am just sorry that my move here has not worked out.”

Malta striker Daniel Bogdanovic is on the books of United but his future at the club is now in doubt.
